NINE INCH NAILS Launching iPhone App

April 8, 2009

The Pulse of Radio reports that NINE INCH NAILS frontman Trent Reznor unveiled a new NIN-based application for the iPhone and iPod Touch in a video at access.nin.com this week. In the clip, Reznor, NIN art director Rob Sheridan, and Digg.com founder Kevin Rose walk viewers through the app's features, which include hours of fan remixes of NIN songs, live concert footage, and what Wired.com described as a "more user-friendly" version of NIN.com that can be accessed through the handheld Apple devices.

The app's most startling feature, however, is a GPS function that ties into Google Earth and lets fans connect with other NIN app users in their area or around the world. A post on a message board can be found through the app and the location of the person who posted it can be pinpointed within a two-mile radius, allowing fans in the same area to find each other, meet up for concerts, or do whatever else NIN fans like to do together.

Reznor and his team are already at work on the 2.0 version of the app, which will feature more integration with the GPS system and other Apple products, according to RollingStone.com.

The first version of the app will be available later this month as soon as it is approved by Apple.

Reznor has been on the cutting edge of what Wired.com calls a "post-label world" ever since leaving the corporate music industry behind in the fall of 2007.

Since then, he has released free music and live videos, issued albums as digital downloads and deluxe limited edition packages, made his web site and online ventures far more user-friendly and interactive, and embraced programs such as Twitter as a means to communicate directly with fans.

Reznor told Wired, "Anyone who's an executive at a record label does not understand what the Internet is, how it works, how people use it, how fans and consumers interact — no idea. I'm surprised they know how to use e-mail. They have built a business around selling plastic discs, and nobody wants plastic discs any more."

NINE INCH NAILS will head out on a co-headlining tour with JANE'S ADDICTION later this spring.
